March 14
Saturday

Wheaton in WinterWe can't promise the park will be as snow-free as shown in the photo, but plan to have fun anyway and help us celebrate Pi Day at this upcoming *Saturday* event at Wheaton Regional Park. We will be offering even more than a full set of courses: in addition to the seven white through blue courses, by popular request course setter Mihai Sirbu has added a "beige" advanced course, which is an advanced course but one that is shorter than brown.

Timing will be standard: Registration will be from 10:45am to 1:15pm, start any time between 11-1:30. Everyone must be out of the woods and back at the registration/finish area by 3:00pm, which is when we will begin picking up the controls. Note that the registration/start area being used this time is the one off Arcola Ave., near the dog park.

Any youth or large groups attending, please contact the Meet Director so that we can coordinate pre-registration for your group; the group registration and waiver form is part of the information on our Group Leaders page.

Joses GrillPost-Event MeetUp & Discount! Head over to nearby Jose's Grill, where all orienteers will receive a 10% discount. Disregard their website's photos - it's really a casual place, where you'll feel welcome and enjoy the food. And it's on the west side of Georgia Ave, a block before University (on the way to the Beltway from Wheaton Park), so it's convenient to get to as well.

Nearby Attractions:

The Wheaton Ice Arena: It's within walking distance of our registration area (and has full restroom facilities). On our event day, public skating sessions are from 12:30-2:30 and 4-6pm, with $6.50 admission and $3.25 skate rental. [$12 freestyle session from 2:45-3:45.] Details here.

Special question: Do you know why this year's Pi Day has special significance?

Course NotesClassic

The Wheaton map is showing its age. The elements marked on the map exist on the ground, but you will find occasional unmapped ones. Some examples are new objects in the open area around the west parking lot, new benches throughout the park and a lot of new (and big !) rootstocks from recent storms. Some of the mapped rootstocks tend to be old and thus on the small side.

Map scales will be 1:10,000 for the advanced courses and probably 1:7500 or so for the beginner courses; contour interval is 5 meters.

(The following terrain notes are from before the heavy snow of March 5). The marked paths are either muddy or frozen solid. Outside of the paths there is a uniform 2-3 inch snow cover that hides all small details and can make for treacherous footing in the woods. Wear appropriate shoes and expect to get wet from the snow. Most streams are small and can be crossed without getting wetter.

Important Notes
  • At the event, we can only accept payment in cash or check; online, you may use a credit card or PayPal account.
  • You may become a member at the event or by joining online via this webpage (which also explains the member benefits). Membership is completely optional.
  • Most of our events use an 'epunch' timing chip for electronic timing. Individuals or groups without their own epunch pay a higher entry fee (see above), which includes the loan of an epunch for that event. Loaned epunches that are lost incur a $40 replacement fee. Epunches (also known as SI-cards or finger sticks) are usually available for sale at each event as described here.
  • Compasses are available at no charge, but if lost incur a $15 replacement fee.
  • Please provide collateral (driver's license or car keys) when borrowing a compass or epunch.
  • For additional safety, whistles are available for sale at $1/each.
  • Free beginner instruction is always available - just ask at the registration table.
