PWF Welcome to QOC's classic orienteering event at the Turkey Run Ridge camping area in Prince William Forest Park--the first time we've returned to this specific venue since 2016.

Pre-registration for this event is required and is now open here.

Karla Hulett and Gary Smith are designing a full set of courses (preliminary stats, pending approval, are now posted below) that will take advantage of the terrain south of the camp ground running down to the South Fork of Quantico Creek, a sector that we have used much less in the past than the areas north, east, and west of Turkey Run Ridge.

Also, this year, for the first time, we will be parking at Turkey Run Ridge in the parking lot and in camping areas A-E rather than shuttling from the parking areas near the park HQ. Participants will drive their cars directly to Turkey Run Ridge, following QOC signage. White and Yellow Courses will cross Turkey Run Ridge Road; please use extra care when driving into the parking area. In an effort to minimize congestion at the registration site, we encourage car pooling.

The park entrance fee is $15 per car, and although there is a planned increase on January 1st, 2020, the park will maintain the $15 fee for our event. If the pay station at the park entrance is not manned, entry fees can be paid at the park HQ before driving out to the registration site at Turkey Run Ridge.

(As a side note, with entry fees at PWFP rising in the near future to $20 per car and the cost of an annual park pass at $35, QOC members may want to consider purchasing annual passes for this great park.)

For those new to orienteering, we will hold beginner orienteer training continuously during the event; just tell the friendly folks at registration if you'd like to be in one and they'll take care of you. Also, make sure to check out our Your First Event and For Beginners webpages, and if they don't answer any question you have, just use our Contact Us form and ask away!

Group Leaders: please see our For Group Leaders webpage and then contact the Event Director so your group can get pre-registered in advance. Do not use the online registration (it's for individuals and groups of 4 or less).

Additional Information:

  • As mentioned above, parking for QOC participants will be at Turkey Run Ridge--NOT at Pine Grove or Williams Ball Field
  • Dogs are welcome in this park but must be kept on leash at all times.
  • The rest rooms at Turkey Run Ridge will be open for our event--one adjacent to the parking lot and the other at the far end of the campground.

Course NotesClassic

Updated: We have located start about 400 meters south of Registration so we can use the nice woods south of the South Fork Quantico Creek for the shorter advanced courses. The courses are designed so that most of the Quantico Creek crossings have road/bridge route choices. Given the weather forecast for the early weekend, you will get your feet wet if you choose the cross the creek. The leaves have filled the smaller ditches and make the trails harder to see. The woods are generally open and runnable, but there are areas of unmapped dense deadfall and green vegetation. All courses cross different parts of the park roads. Please use care when crossing the road and when driving into Turkey Run Ridge Parking area. White and Yellow Courses Leg 1 will use red/orange streamers to navigate to the first control. This area is very technical so moving up to the Orange Course for the first time is not advised.

Important Notes
  • If you wish to become a QOC member you should join online in advance via this webpage (which also explains the member benefits). Membership is completely optional.
  • Most of our events use an 'epunch' timing chip for electronic timing. Individuals or groups without their own epunch pay a higher entry fee (see above), which includes the loan of an epunch for that event. Loaned epunches that are lost incur a $40 replacement fee. Epunches (also known as SI-cards or finger sticks) can be purchased from online vendors as described here.
  • Former QOC members who have let their membership lapse pay non-member fees.
  • Compasses are available at no charge, but if lost incur a $15 replacement fee.
  • Please provide collateral (driver's license or car keys) when borrowing a compass or epunch.
  • For additional safety, whistles are available for sale at $1/each.
  • Free beginner instruction is always available - just ask at the registration table.
