Meadowood
September 30
Sunday
Ready for some fine orienteering? Meadowood's ready for you, and a full set of 7 courses, from beginner to advanced, will be offered. The map has been updated since there are several new trails since the last time QOC visited this area.
New to orienteering? We will hold beginner clinics continuously as needed during both events; just tell the friendly folks at registration if you'd like to be in one and they'll take care of you. Also, make sure to check out our Your First Event and For Beginners webpages, and if they don't answer any question you have, just use our Contact Us form and ask away!
Group Leaders: please see our For Group Leaders webpage and then contact this event's Director (Dan Do) so we can get your group registered in advance.
For this event, please note the following:
- Parking/Carpooling: parking at this venue is limited and the omens plus group pre-registrations suggest we'll see a strong turnout. Carpooling is therefore strongly encouraged, so strongly, in fact, that we'll be raffling off two $50 REI gift cards, generously donated by REI in celebration of the October 5-7 grand opening of their new Woodbridge location. To be eligible for the raffle, you must come to the event in a vehicle containing at least three orienteers (or walk, bike or take public transit to the event or volunteer at the event). Look for the raffle list at registration and add your name if you're eligible. The winners will be randomly selected once the start window closes. Update: on reflection, relying entirely on carpooling with no backup plan to avoid having to turn people away in case it proves insufficient seems unwise. We're therefore going to reserve the parking by registration for volunteers, groups/carpools and non-members of QOC (since they're more likely to be caught by surprise by the last minute complication of our parking plan). Others will be directed to park at nearby Gunston Elementary School. There they can either form ad hoc carpools and return or walk to the event through the park. The walking route, of ~1.3km starting from the south end of the school parking lot will be marked with a combination of pink signs, streamers and surveyors flags.
- GROUP LEADERS: Please pre-register your group following the guidelines on our 'For Group Leaders' webpage and via the form mentioned in the Registration section (on that webpage). Email the information directly to this event's Meet Director or use our Contact Us form.
- Popular Offering!: QOC members interested in borrowing (at no cost) a Garmin 205 GPS-watch to record their routes should see Jon Torrance at the registration table. We'll even enter your route into RouteGadget for you!
- ALL COURSES: Participants MUST stay out of fenced horse pastures; those areas are closed to the general public. Participants MUST stop if they encounter a horse on trails until the rider indicates that it is safe to pass. Please WALK if you see a horse in the distance so it doesn't spook.
- Dogs are welcome. All dogs must be on a leash that is no longer than 6 feet.
- Please respect park boundaries and posted signs should you run across them.
- At the event, we can only accept payment in cash or check; online, you may use a credit card or PayPal account.
- Most of our events use electronic timing. We will provide you with an electronic timing chip (aka e-stick, finger dibber, or SI-card) for free if you don't own one. Loaned e-sticks that are lost incur a $40 replacement fee.
- Compasses are available at no charge, but if lost incur a $15 replacement fee.
- Please provide collateral (driver's license or car keys) when borrowing a compass or e-punch.
- For additional safety, whistles are available for sale at $1/each.
- Free beginner instruction is always available - just ask at the registration table.
