McKeldin
January 8
Sunday
Our registration area for this event will be in Pavilion 501, not far from the entry gate house at McKeldin. We made the shift to be closer to the only bathroom facility that will be open in the park. We fully expect that winter will have arrived by the day of the meet, and we will have a fire going in the pavilion grill and some marshmallows available for roasting along with hot chocolate and coffee. We encourage participants to bring left-over holiday treats to share - with the exception of fruit cakes predating the 2011 holiday season. We hope to see lots of folks out to experience McKeldin's hilly terrain and the challenging courses that Mark and Patti Mace have planned.
Any youth or large groups attending, please contact the Event Director so that we can coordinate pre-registration for your group; the group registration and waiver form is part of the information on our Group Leaders page.
E-punching will be in use, and course details are now posted. If you are considering trying a harder level course than usual, you might want to consider it carefully since these courses have a greater amount of climb due to the nature of this terrain. We do anticipate having plenty of water on hand. Also, the QOC library will be on hand, thanks to course setters Mark & Patti Mace, so see them at the event if you'd like to check it out.
Update: Ted Good will be conducting an advanced training session starting at 10:30 and running 15 - 30 minutes. This is informal training, and no pre-registration is needed. If this is your first training then there is a training questionnaire to fill out that will make you think about your orienteering strengths and weaknesses. The session at McKeldin will focus on Pre Race Preparation: Knowing everything you can about the event/course/map before even starting.

Course Notes | Classic Orienteering For an explanation of the course color-coding system, please refer to Your First Event. The terrain and visibility are great at this time of year. The map has been updated. There were some new/changed trails and a few rootstocks added. There are some unmapped “temporary or under construction trails” at the southern part of the park, marked with small colored flags or streamers along the trails. For Green, Red and Blue runners: Caution - you will have to cross Marriottsville Rd several times. Please watch out for oncoming vehicles. Check your control numbers carefully because some controls are close to others. For all runners: Do not cross the river. If you do, you are lost. | ||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||
