Mid-Atlantic Championships
November 20
Sunday
The Mid-Atlantic Champs pit QOC against neighboring clubs DVOA and SVO, and all QOC members are encouraged to come help us win - at the very least - the most points for participation! The club with the highest number of points overall, based on some obscure numerology involving placement in each classic course + participation + team relay results, wins the Broken Compass Award. This year the event will be hosted by DVOA at the Governor Dick Environmental Center in Lebanon County, PA, east of Harrisburg, so for event details, head to the DVOA schedule. To figure out where this park is, check out DVOA's online map or our Google map link below. And to get familiar with the park, there are 360 degree photos here, a trail map here, and fine examples of courses on the O'map itself courtesy of the DVOA RouteGadget link for an event held there this last April (recommended viewing!). Course lengths, including for the 3 relay legs, are now posted on this webpage.
Relay Runners: Please email Jon Torrance ASAP (just click on his name) a note including your name, gender, age and usual course (yellow? red? etc) if you'd like to have fun as a relay runner AND you are getting to the event by means other than the bus - thanks!
QOC Clubhouse: OK, that's an exaggeration, but we have rented the Nature Center room to serve as a place for QOC members to hang out from 10am - 1pm. Drop by (no cleats please), let us know which course(s) you're running, or just find a comfortable chair to rest on!
And for your enjoyment, we've now secured the services of a full-size bus (see below), complete with WiFi, DVD, reclining seats and even a lavatory to carry those interested in leaving the driving to a pro. Contact Us if you really need a bus seat and haven't signed up. Sign up using the ticket form below, using the orange 'Register' button; $5 will be collected on the bus per QOC member and $15 for non-members (not already a member? now's the time to join!). This is a fun and relaxing way to get to this event and we highly encourage you to sign up. The four locations and times to meet up with the bus are:
- 7:00am: Bus departs from the Vienna-Fairfax GMU Metro parking lot (North side of I-66)
- 7:30am: Bus departs from the Grosvenor-Strathmore Metro Park’n’Ride, Rockville MD
- 7:55am: Bus leaves from Forest Glen Metro Park’n’Ride, Georgia Ave. & Forest Glen Rd, Forest Glen MD
- 8:30am: Bus departs from South Rolling Road Park’n’Ride, Catonsville MD (near I-95)
The key thing is to be there, whether you get on your own, in a carpool (try our new carpool widget below!), or on the bus. This is pretty much an all day commitment - the bus will be picking up riders at 4 locations between 7am - 8:30am and not returning until 5 or 6pm, for example - but it's a fun day of orienteering and we'd like you to be there!
And here are the bus photos:
