A windy, initially chilly, but ultimately sunny and pleasant March day at George Mason University was sometimes a little tough for those who were sedentary on Wilkins Plaza but quite enjoyable for runners sprinting (or trotting) in the lee of campus buildings.
It's hard to say whether the principal memory of this event will be the long columns of food delivery robot vehicles rolling though our set-up area throughout the day or the horrific experiences of unwary orienteers who encountered the highly aggressive and possibly demonic Canadian Goose in residence near control 110. The mayhem wasn't quite like THIS, but some said it was close.
Many club members are, as always, deserving of our thanks for a successful QOC event:
First and foremost, course setter Tom Strat who rolled with the punches as we responded to GMU-mandated changes to his courses and provided everyone with a great day of urban orienteering at a venue new to many. And then, to top things off, he hosted us for craft beer and Taiwanese street food at his HighLine bar and restaurant!
Thanks also to Co-Event Director Bob Fawcett for all his invaluable assistance with the event from the early planning stages through the execution.
And of course, we had the usual great crop of volunteers helping to accomplish all the key event tasks. Some came on board early, and some jumped in at the last minute to help out:

  • On Check-in, Harry Jones who made sure everyone knew not to "mess with the robots" and Ginny Quam
  • On Starts, Mathias Holmqvist (sadly leaving in the not too distant future to return to Sweden) and Beatri Bennett
  • Providing Beginner Instruction, Bob Fawcett and Aaron Linville
  • Finishing up the event on Control Pick-up: Lisa Fisher, Jens Wira, Paul Hession, Keg Good, Victor Lin, Mark Thomsen, and Ed Joseph
  • At the E-punch station: Our perennial team of Amy Louden and Valerie Meyer as well as Aaron Linville
Finally, thanks to the Jenny Zeng and the entire GMU crew who helped make this event a reality.
See you all next weekend at Prince William Forest!
