March 16
Sunday

Wood BridgeRegistration for this event will open at 6pm on Monday March 10 and close on Saturday March 15 at noon (the day before the event). Advance registration is required.

Welcome back to Happyland at Prince William Forest Park! PWFP is home to some of the finest terrain in Virginia and has played host to many remarkable events, including: PWFP Training Weekend, Mid-Atlantic Champs, and Night-O. The terrain is that good! For this event, our course setter, Patrick Farley, is presenting a full series of classic courses.

#Breaking News - This event is being hosted out of Camp 2 @ Happyland, not Camp 5. All else remains the same, except a bit of mystery and curiosity about what Camp 2 terrain is all about!

Key Points:

  • Park Pass: Purchase a daily or annual park pass online before the event.
  • Registration Check in at the tent at Camp 2.
  • Volunteer: Your help is appreciated! Click here to volunteer.
Parking/Driving Details:
A detailed locator map is available to help you navigate from I-95 to Mawavi Road. Once on Mawavi Road, take the first left and follow the road down to Camp 2. You’ll see the familiar signs and faces guiding you to the parking lot. Please note, the locator map doesn’t have Camp 2, but it shows Mawavi Road. Follow the signs after that.

Please note that you may have to walk a bit from the parking field to reach the registration area. Important: Even though you're not using the main park entrance, you are still required to have a valid park pass. Make sure to purchase and print your park pass in advance.

Post-event Social: After your run, grab a bite with fellow orienteers at Artisana Pizza, located here, 9 miles east of the park.

Additional information:

  • Restrooms: Porta-potties will be available near registration.
  • Dogs: Dogs are allowed in the park but must remain on a leash at all times.
  • Registration: All participants must pre-register; day-of registration is not available.
  • Group Size: Groups are limited to 4 persons (1 e-punch per group).
  • Food & Hydration: Bring your own water and food as the club does not provide these.
  • Course Completion: Be off the course no later than 3 PM.
  • Download: Download your results before leaving; otherwise, we'll be coming to look!

Course NotesClassic

The Happyland map is somewhat dated. Due to the age, generally the green isn't very accurate, with much newer growth, downed trees and deadfall. Areas with two colored mottled green does not represent actual paths within the mottle. Generally speaking the mottled areas should be considered as the darker color of the mottle. Rock Piles/cairns tend to be small (less than a meter). Foliage and deadfall are particularly dense, plan routes carefully. Special note, the thorn vines are aggressive, please use caution.

Yellow Course Note: The Yellow course has a ~180m leg that will have pink streamers to assist in navigating between two handrails. This is also shown in the control sheet.

Group Entries

Participants are welcome to orienteer together as a group (up to the maximum for that event; usually 4). Each member of a group is charged their individual rate as shown above, up to a group total of $30 (maximum), and each receives a map. A group receives one epunch. Individuals or groups desiring to compete on a second course after completing their first can do so for a reduced fee of $2/map subject to approval at the event by the Event Director.

Important Notes
  • If you wish to become a QOC member you should join online in advance via this webpage (which also explains the member benefits). Membership is completely optional.
  • Most of our events use an 'epunch' timing chip for electronic timing. Individuals or groups without their own epunch will be loaned one for that event. Loaned epunches that are lost incur a $40 replacement fee. Epunches (also known as SI-cards or finger sticks) can be purchased from online vendors as described here.
  • Former QOC members who have let their membership lapse pay non-member fees.
  • Compasses are available at no charge, but if lost incur a $15 replacement fee.
  • Please provide collateral (such as car keys) when borrowing a compass or epunch.
  • Beginners are encouraged to watch relevant videos such as this one created by QOC's instructional guru David Onkst.
