Sunday
Registration is now closed.
UPDATE: Due to the recent heavy rains and damp conditions, the Intro-to-O courses will take place on the CCBC campus. In place of muddy trails and slippery stream crossings, the white and yellow courses will be umbrella friendly and there will be even more controls to enjoy finding!
Quantico Orienteering Club (QOC) invites you to join us Sunday Sept. 29 at CCBC Catonsville. This is a combined Sprint on the CCBC campus for our regular attendees and a free Intro to Orienteering session for first-timers in the Patapsco Valley State Park adjacent to campus.
Intro to O: Those new to Orienteering are invited to join us to experience this fun, family-friendly sport. Small groups will meet with our instructors to learn the basics of Orienteering and take you on a small demo course. After your instruction you will set out on one of our beginner courses. For more information about the free Intro to Orienteering event, click here.
The White and Yellow courses are for beginners. They follow linear features such as roads, trails, edges of fields, or streams. Checkpoints for the White course will be set on the linear feature. The longer Yellow course checkpoints will be placed on or a short distance from linear features. Going off trail is allowed on both courses, but Yellow courses are set to encourage it.
Sprint-O-Palooza: Choose between the classic White and Yellow courses in Patapsco Valley State Park or join our Sprint-O-Palooza event and run Sprint courses on the CCBC campus. Sprints are designed for fast running and decision making in an urban setting (but you're welcome to go at your own pace). Course designer Alex Azarov has generously designed a full slate of sprint courses. Orange through Blue signups will each be provided with two unique sprint courses. The times from both Sprint courses (A and B) will be combined for your final time. Orienteers are encouraged to rest in between so they can sprint both. Note: due to the urban nature of the sprint courses, metal spikes are prohibited at this event.
Check-in for all courses and Intro to O will be in the field adjacent to CCBC parking lot 6, and will open at 9:45am. Courses will open at 10:00. Everyone must be out of the woods and back to the registration/finish area by 3:00pm. Please allow yourself time to return to the check-in area and download, regardless of whether you have finished, so we know you have survived your adventure!
Note: While the Patapsco Valley State Park has a strict rain policy, this event will go on rain or shine! In the case of rain we will utilize alternative white and yellow courses set on the campus of CCBC (as noted above).
Volunteer: Sign up for a volunteer slot via this form, or email the Event Director directly for other options.
Youth & Group Leaders: If you are leading a youth or large group, please visit our For Group Leaders page. Even though you will be pre-registering online, please contact the Event Director to let them know your plans and numbers.
ASL: ASL-led instruction will be available at the Intro to O event. Participants should check the ASL box when registering so we know you are coming.
Post-Event Social: After your course, join fellow orienteers at the State Fare restaurant in Catonsville, located here just 2 miles north of CCBC. Get 10% off your check with map as proof, courtesy of manager Kirby!
Reminders:
- ALL participants must pre-register. There will be NO day-of, on-site registration. Refunds only in the case of event cancellation.
- There is NO water or food on the course or at registration; please come prepared.

Course Notes | Sprint + Intro to O Course Notes for Intro-to-O and White and Yellow Courses
White and Yellow courses use the standard orienteering map for Patapsco Valley State Park (Hilton area). It is early in our Orienteering season, so the park is greener than mapped. Some indistinct trails may have disappeared, and some new trails may have been forged (especially close to campus). Watch out for mountain bikers who frequently use the trails.
The park has areas of wavyleaf basket grass, an invasive plant, that is currently in seed at this time of the year. It has small sticky seeds that easily attach to shoes and clothes. Courses have been set to avoid most of it, but there is some alongside the trails. Check your shoes and clothing after finishing your course (especially if you go off-trail). Seeds should be removed and thrown in the trash to prevent spreading the plant to other areas.
Course Notes for Sprint-O-Palooza
Many thanks to Ted Good who did the fieldwork and drafted the campus map to ISSprOM standard!
The Orange through Blue courses are normal sprint courses; make sure to check codes since some controls are quite close to others. To make the courses more interesting the circle road is marked out of bounds. This means that runners must not cross it anywhere other than at one of the designated crossing points (there are 4, shown with a special symbol); these crossings are either crosswalks or speedbumps. Runners may run alongside the road (on grass or paths), and, runners may also cross the northeast portion of the circle road that is not shown as out of bounds.
Given the urban nature of the sprint courses, metal spikes will not be helpful and are likely to damage the venue. Consequently, metal spikes are prohibited on the course and inside all CCBC buildings.
N.B.: sprint course distances (and stats) as shown are the sum of the two courses, and are straight line distances. Due to having to go around out of bounds areas as well as buildings, actual distances will be significantly longer!
!!! Remember, It’s important !!! The circle road must not be crossed anywhere other than at designated places. Be careful of traffic, busses and cars on campus roads.
Sprint Map Notes:
- 1:4,000 2.5 meter contours.
- Roads use the darker brown color (heavy traffic). Parking lots and sidewalks use the lighter beige color (light traffic).
- Trees, large green circle, represent areas where you can run under the branches. The number of trees may not always be correct as some may have died/been cut down since mapped.
- Bush symbol, smaller green circle, is used for smaller trees and bushes where you can’t pass under the branches.
- In some cases, tree and bush symbols were used indiscriminately and were based on what would fit on the map. Large evergreens are mapped as “dark green fight.”
- Open area surrounds most tree areas as these can be run through at speed. A few ‘Open with Scattered trees’ are where there were too many trees to mapped individually.
- Large electrical boxes are mapped as minimum sized buildings.
- Bus stops use small building symbol.
- Stairs: Almost all stairs have crossable railings that aren't mapped. So don’t expect to be able to run across stairs, just up/down them. Stairs may be extended on map so there are at least two steps making them easier to see. There is no way to know if stairs go up or down until you get there. There are a few areas where stairs go both up and down which can be confusing.
- Walls/Cliffs: Hard to determine which “uncrossable lines” are walls and which are cliffs/drop- offs. Either way assume you can’t cross them. Where room existed on the map I used the “cliff tags” to help show up vs down, but in many cases the tags obscured features so couldn’t be used.
- Gardens (olive green): Generally, I didn't map gardens as out of bounds. Try not to run across any garden areas. Any olive green on the map may not be crossed.
- Multi-Level area: Several buildings have more than 2 levels that are runnable. Only two levels are mapped (generally the topmost and bottom most). Unusable entrances are either not on the map or have a purple line to show do not enter. Look for the line of triangles to show the lower level entrance/exit.
- Man Made Features: X symbol used for Flag poles, Stone bench memorial, and Cistern Cap (historical Feature).
- 2 meter root stocks at the time of mapping. Some may be smaller now over time. They are definitely removed if they get below a meter.
- Rock: All distinct rocks are mapped. If they are at least a meter in any direction they are the map. Smaller boulders are mapped around the Catonsville Community College.
- Forest Areas not mapped to sprint standards. These came from the Forest map and haven't been updated.
- Not Mapped: Dumpsters, street lights, fire hydrants, telephone lines/pole (except in wooded or open areas).

Group Entries
Participants are welcome to orienteer together as a group (up to the maximum for that event; usually 4). Each member of a group is charged their individual rate as shown above, up to a group total of $30 (maximum), and each receives a map. A group receives one epunch. Individuals or groups desiring to compete on a second course after completing their first can do so for a reduced fee of $2/map subject to approval at the event by the Event Director.
Important Notes
- If you wish to become a QOC member you should join online in advance via this webpage (which also explains the member benefits). Membership is completely optional.
- Most of our events use an 'epunch' timing chip for electronic timing. Individuals or groups without their own epunch will be loaned one for that event. Loaned epunches that are lost incur a $40 replacement fee. Epunches (also known as SI-cards or finger sticks) can be purchased from online vendors as described here.
- Former QOC members who have let their membership lapse pay non-member fees.
- Compasses are available at no charge, but if lost incur a $15 replacement fee.
- Please provide collateral (such as car keys) when borrowing a compass or epunch.
- Beginners are encouraged to watch relevant videos such as this one created by QOC's instructional guru David Onkst.
