Thanks to all who participated in our orienteering meet at Marine Corps Base Quantico on Saturday, May 11, 2024. The weather was perfect for orienteering. We had 118 starts and 150 participants who ran a full slate of classic orienteering courses designed and set by Aaron Linville. Although the rain the previous week left the marshy areas and water courses quite wet, the moderate temperature during the day made getting wet bearable.
Heartfelt thanks to the many volunteers who made the event possible. A special thanks to my co-meet director, Bob Fawcett, who, after helping with setup, had the morning duty of manning the Visitor Control Center to facilitate getting folks through the base security process and then helped out in multiple ways in the afternoon, staying until the bitter end. Also, thanks to Greg Lennon for handling the website and registration process, which, due to the Base restrictions on what we can publish prior to event approval, requires more effort than a normal meet. And of course, special thanks to the timing team of Amy Louden and Valerie Meyer for everything they do, from printing and sealing maps to coming early to set up the timing equipment, checking in participants, handing out e-punches, downloading, posting results, and monitoring participants to make sure everyone gets back safely (if not on time) – and of course Amy’s famous cookies, much appreciated by all. The dependable Harry Jones handled morning check-in with Scott Sharp, who also deserves thanks for making two runs to the VCC to get people who required an escort to get on Base. In addition to designing and setting the courses, Aaron Linville did beginner instruction throughout the day, helped with the timing, and coordinated control pickup.
Control pickers were Francielo Dalla Costa, Linnea Morres, John Organek, Stephen Pepe, Howie Weinstein, and a late addition, Justin Brown, who due to his impressive split times in getting to two difficult controls, was asked to pick up those controls (in addition to his first-place finish on the Red course – congratulations, Justin!). Kudos to Charlotte Banfield for setting up a String-O course for the young folks. Also, to Kathleen & Greg for bringing samples of the new QOC windbreakers and jackets for people to try on and order (if you haven’t seen them yet, they are gorgeous – make sure you try them on at a future event and order yours before June 21). Also, Jane Leggett has identified one source of some very nice O-pants and had samples to try on (see our Clothing webpage for these and other options). She will be placing an order soon, so if you are interested, see her at the Swanson Road Meet on May 19, where she is the event director.
We also had a “first” at this meet – something I doubt has ever happened before. A newborn fawn followed a couple JROTC cadets back to the HQ area from out on their course at the end of the day. Several people made frantic phone calls to animal rescue groups to determine how best to handle the situation, since the mother was not to be found. Eventually, we were told that we should take the fawn back to the location where the cadets first saw it. Valerie produced a suitable carrier bag and Greg & Kathleen carefully returned it to a suitable area near where it was first encountered. A special thanks to everyone who “came to the rescue.”
Make sure you check this website post-Wednesday and QOC social media sites for photos from the event (thanks to Kathleen and those who've taken photos and shared them with her).
