Lake Needwood
To enter your routes and see how others went, head to RouteGadget.
Please note that the splits on AttackPoint do not adjust for the control sequence that participants visited the controls in for the Short and Long Stumble.
For an idea of where you stood during the course, you need to look at time for the FIXED control before and after the window.
For the Short, this was the time to #1, 5, 6, 11, 12, 13, 18, 19, 20, 21, 22 and Finish.
For the Long, the split points which are the same for everyone on the course are 1, 6, 10, 11, 16, 17, 18, 23, 24, 25, 29, 30, 31, 36, 37, 38, 39, 40 and Finish.
Update April 30: The start times for the Long and Short course were reported to the timing team incorrectly. If you were in the mass start, then your time has gone down by a minute. This did not affect the placements. It will affect your route drawing in RouteGadget, and you will need to use the slider bar to account for that minute when uploading GPS tracks.

After Sunday's successful 24th Susquehanna Stumble and recreational courses at Lake Needwood, I found myself pondering the joys of volunteering. Yes, it can be hard and complicated, even frustrating sometimes, but all that becomes so worthwhile once one experiences the coalescing of numerous volunteers, venue, and participants into such a fun day. I hope everyone had as much fun as I did at Lake Needwood.
We had 297 participants altogether (not counting those who were present but not able to do a course). Greg reports that is a record for the Stumble! We had more than 300 starts with 54 groups of two or more, and some who went out on second courses. Approximately 90 braved the Stumble. The total also includes two JROTC groups, with approximately 40 cadets, from BPI USAFJROTC (Baltimore) and John F Kennedy High School. QOC got to welcome fellow orienteers from other clubs, including DVOA and HVO. There were many tired but happy faces all around. Congratulations to those who were fastest, and to all those who made the effort to get out on a hot day. All of you were winners!
As always, our event would not have happened without all the amazing volunteers. While every one played an important role, the MVP awards would have to go to Sam Listwak and Amy Louden. Sam designed and set the courses, monitored traffic at a road crossing, and coordinated control pick-up. Amy, almost entirely by herself, managed ePunch; that was a particular feat considering the number of registrations, the delayed mass start, at-capacity early orienteers, and technical challenges.
I’d also like especially to call out the barbecue and food management team: Ebsen Jepsen, Susan Shoemaker, John Landers, and Victoria Emerson. To the delight of all who partook, they managed set-up, grilling, doling out the food, and clean-up, with skill and cheerfulness. Thanks also to those who brought delectable side dishes, condiments, and desserts: while I don’t know all who contributed, they include Patti Mace, Reiko Rager, and Sharmagh Yepremian.
Nadim Ahmed spent dozens of hours updating the maps for this event.
Brad Whitmore arranged and handed out the Stumble award towels, and his daughter, Josie Whitmore, designed the towel. Brad also provided a display of the historic towels.
Though hot and tired, control pick-up volunteers were Alex Azarov, Francielo de la Costa, Sidney Dixon, Ted Good, Mikal Jarnik, Ed Johnson, David Levine, Steve Pepe, and Howie Weinstein.
Kudos also to Charlotte Banfield. The Lake Needwood event saw one of our most successful string-Os yet, with over 10 kids taking their first steps into independent orienteering (you gotta start somewhere!). The good weather (and perhaps also the irresistible lure of a post-run grill) brought families out of the woodwork who hadn't orienteered in years or who were orienteering for the first time ever. The kids ranged in ages from 3 to 6 years old; those with a more competitive streak even went round the string-O multiple times, trying to beat their previous times. Thus far, Charlotte has set up and led the string-o with two little ones in tow. She would welcome volunteers to help out.
Additional volunteers, some of whom filled several roles during the event, include (in no particular order): Valerie Meyer, Kathleen Lennon, Don Fish, Craig Shelden, Greg Lennon, Stephanie Coffin, Harry Jones, Vitor de la Costa, Mateus de la Costa, Florence Tan, James Fotouhi, Patti Mace, Mark Mace, Francis O’Reilly, and Charles Carrick.
I apologize for those unnamed who stepped up to pitch in or who I may otherwise have missed. Thank you for a great day!
