Pohick BayPre-registration is required and will open on Monday, Feb. 12th at 6pm. Registration will close Saturday, Feb. 17th at 12 noon.

Welcome back to Pohick Bay Regional Park and its compact mix of draw-and-reentrant terrain with an extensive trail network. This season's Pohick Bay event returns to the main area of the park with check-in at Shelter 1 (see this locator map). For this meet, some longer courses will also go onto adjacent Gunston Hall terrain as well. Tavia Sullens has prepared a full set of classic courses for your enjoyment.

There will be no park entry fee. The kiosk at the park gate will be unmanned. Just follow signage from the entrance to the main parking lot and Shelter 1.

As usual, everyone must be out of the woods and back at the registration/finish area by 3:00pm when we will begin picking up the controls.

Note that the disc golf course area adjacent to the main parking lot and southern camping loop are both off limits and marked as such on course maps. Make sure to avoid all off-limits areas indicated either by olive green coloring or by overlaid cross-hatching.

Post-Event Social: Join fellow orienteers after your run at the Hometown Grill and Bar, located here only 5 miles northwest of Pohick.

Keep in mind:

  • Port-a-johns will be located near Shelter 1.
  • All participants must pre-register; there is no day-of registration.
  • The size of start teams (groups of individuals orienteering together with one e-punch) on a course must be no more than four (4) individuals (juniors and adults combined).
  • No food items will be provided.
  • Participants are responsible for meeting all their own hydration needs before, during and after their courses.
  • As always, please be off the course no later than 3pm and remember to download at our e-punch station even if you did not finish.
  • Beginner's instruction will be available.
  • For those new to orienteering, make sure to check out our Your First Event and Orienteering Techniques For Beginners webpages, and if they don't answer any question you have, just use our Contact Form and ask.
  • Group Leaders (of larger groups): please contact the Event Director so they are aware of your plans.
  • Dogs are allowed in the park but must be on a leash at all times.

Course NotesClassic

Woods are generally fairly open and runnable due to the season, but green areas should still be respected as some areas tend to be populated with evergreens.
Runners on the Red and Blue courses will have a map flip as courses extend into part of Gunston Hall.
Red and Blue runners should be cognizant that the Pohick and Gunston Hall maps were prepared at different times and that the Gunston Hall map uses 2.5 m contours and the older 2000 symbol set, while the Pohick map uses 5 m contours and the newer symbol set.
All runners should be aware that the map(s) are showing some age.
As such, rootstocks and some knolls may have decayed. No rootstocks have been used as controls, and knolls that are used are recognizable as such.
There may be additional unmapped man made objects and some may no longer be present. Man made objects and ruins used as controls are recognizable as such.
Runners should check at registration to see if there are additional notes.
ALL runners should respect the out of bounds areas marked on the map, for example: the disc golf course and the camping loop and the private property in the northern area of the map.

Important Notes
  • If you wish to become a QOC member you should join online in advance via this webpage (which also explains the member benefits). Membership is completely optional.
  • Most of our events use an 'epunch' timing chip for electronic timing. Individuals or groups without their own epunch will be loaned one for that event. Loaned epunches that are lost incur a $40 replacement fee. Epunches (also known as SI-cards or finger sticks) can be purchased from online vendors as described here.
  • Former QOC members who have let their membership lapse pay non-member fees.
  • Compasses are available at no charge, but if lost incur a $15 replacement fee.
  • Please provide collateral (such as car keys) when borrowing a compass or epunch.
  • Beginners are encouraged to watch relevant videos such as this one created by QOC's instructional guru David Onkst
