November 9
Saturday

Night OrienteeringPre-registration is now open and is required for this event. Registration will close at 12 noon on Saturday Nov. 9.
There will be no at-event registration.

We're excited to be back in the Turkey Run Ridge area of Prince William Forest Park for our annual Night-O, the first of two orienteering events of our Night and Day O'Fest weekend! (For information common to both weekend events, check out this website; for Sunday event details, head here.) Come orienteer in the dark - it's fun and only a little spooky!

Course designers Matt Smith and Bill Wight have designed five wonderful night courses: Beginner, Intermediate ('orange-equivalent'), and three Advanced courses. Our O events this weekend are taking place on a newly remapped portion of the Turkey Run area map with courses running mostly east of the campground. Full map and course comments are now posted below.

Enjoy the weekend fully immersed in Prince William's Forest! We have the Turkey Run Ridge Group Campground reserved for Saturday night. For camping information and availability, Contact Parker Nevenglosky.

We will have four 30 minute check-in windows for the Night-O; advance registration with payment is required. The first check-in window will open at 6:15pm, and starts take place between 6:30pm - 8:30pm. Be absolutely sure to be back before 10:30pm. Please check-in during the window you selected during registration, and remember to allow yourself time for driving to as well as inside the park. Traffic on I-95 can be unpredictable.

Some parking will be in the Turkey Run parking lot, but most will be in the adjacent campground spaces. Check-in will again be in the small conference room building just adjacent to the gate leading to Old Blacktop Road. When you turn in to the Turkey Run entrance road, look for a parking volunteer wearing a reflective vest and giving directions on where to go. A locator graphic is here.

Parking is somewhat limited at the site, so carpooling is encouraged (and will save $). Per-vehicle park entry fee is $20; if the pay station at the entrance is not manned, entry fees can be paid at the park HQ before driving out to the check-in site at Turkey Run or via the National Parks Service app available at this link. (NOTE: cash is no longer accepted! The fee for an annual Prince William Forest park pass is $35 or $85 for a National Park pass; QOC members may want to consider purchasing an annual pass for this great park, either at a park office or a local REI. Seniors, current or former members of the US Armed Forces and some other categories of park users are entitled to a free passes for the entire National Park System. See this link for details.)

Volunteer: Sign up for a volunteer slot via this form, or email the Event Director directly for other options.

Groups of 8 or more: although you will be pre-registering online, for their awareness please let the Event Director know of your plans and participant numbers. Note

JROTC units who are planning to come by bus, please contact the Event Director to let them know how many buses you would like to bring. There is limited bus parking space at Turkey Run Ridge, but we will have access to a remote parking area where buses can wait during the event.

Keep in mind:

  • Dogs are not permitted at this event.
  • We strongly recommend carrying a whistle and spare batteries and/or a backup headlamp.
  • The restrooms at Turkey Run will be open for our event.
  • Beginner instruction will not be provided at this event.
  • All participants must pre-register; there is no day-of registration.
  • No food items will be provided.
  • Participants are responsible for meeting all their own hydration needs before, during and after their courses.
  • As always, please be off the course no later than 10:30pm and remember to download at our e-punch station even if you did not finish.

Map Notes:
The Turkey Run Ridge area of our Prince William Forrest Park map has recently been updated. This is the first time the new map has been fully used in an event.
Mapper: Jon Torrance 2023/2024.
Contour interval: 5m
Course Map Scales: Beginner 1:5000; Intermediate & Short Advanced 1:7500; Mid- and Long-Advanced 1:10000.

  • Root stocks are 1.5 meter or larger when mapped and use the green X symbol. It only takes one root sticking up higher than 1.5 meters to be mapped. Mapped root stocks having small root balls but one root sticking up may appear below the mapping threshold from a distance. There are other root stocks close to 1.5m that are not mapped.
  • Green Slash is mostly downed trees/branches. Some of the smaller areas are mapped as “walk” instead of “slow run” so they can be seen on the map. The smaller areas can be run through but the larger areas will slow a person down. A fallen trunk symbol is not used. Instead, the large difficult to cross trunks are mapped using green slash symbol. Virtually all of the deadfall was mapped as low vegetation. However, there are many instances of it being too tall to see over or too tall to run through.
  • Mapped cairns in the park are typically well below 1m.
  • Ditches tend to be shallow.
  • Some mapped intermittent streams are predominantly dry unless in heavy rain.
  • There are some old trails and road cuts. Generally, they are not mapped (as rides or roads) unless they are deep enough to be mapped as a ditch.
  • Following current mapping standard, large steep earth banks use the Uncrossable Cliff symbol.
  • There is an abundant use of form lines that makes the terrain look steeper than it is in reality.
  • Leaf covered hillsides can be slippery. Spiked shoes are recommended.
  • Mapped gullies may have streams.
  • Mapped rock follows ISOM 2017 standards of being at least 1m. Mapped boulders and cliffs are generally scarce.
  • Green circle is used to denote a very large tree or a tree with a unusual bulge on it.
  • A variety of linear clearing/rides are mapped. Some are shown as strips of Open Land—these may have tall grass but the grass is usually not thick enough to prevent fast running.
  • Heavy rain prior to the event may leave temporary standing water in flat areas but these are not mapped as intermittent marsh.
Course Notes:
All control locations are marked with standard O-flags plus a reflective tube hung above the flag. Flags are hung higher than usual, all about torso-high. Hopefully they don't light-up from hundreds of meters with a strong headlamp, but none of them should be difficult to find once you've navigated correctly. The challenge should be in the navigation decisions and execution, not finding the flags.

The woods are in great condition and the courses are designed to take advantage of White/open woods. The map is recently updated and vegetation/deadfall is very well mapped. If you experience something you think is not mapped, it may be that the area is small enough to not be a factor during the day and even if the impact is greater in the dark, you can probably easily go around or pick a path through. Keep map contact. It is harder to relocate in the dark, but there is always a bailout around.

These courses are extremely runnable during the day! And at night it is easy to move well depending on route and micro-route choices and visibility. Remember that the woods are carpeted in fallen leaves - sometimes covering debris, uneven ground, or challenging footing that is more difficult to see at night. Mapped green is used to force navigation decisions; typically the clear-woods white routes will be optimal, and vegetation is mapped well enough to follow the edges of or navigate by. There are some micro-routes that can pick paths through vegetation, but your mileage may vary. Most of the time, 'straight' will not be the best route choice.

Beginner is a White/Yellow-equivalent course along handrails/trails.

Intermediate is an Orange-equivalent course with big clear handrails, attack points, and catching features but is not a tour around the trails.

Advanced orienteering is required for the Advanced Night-O courses, which are generally designed as advanced classic courses with a few variations: there are Orange-y route options that are usually not going to be the fastest or optimal route, but are an option if you want to manage the difficulty of your course or if you need a bailout. Flags are much higher as described above. And catching features abound.

Group Entries

Participants are welcome to orienteer together as a group (up to the maximum for that event; usually 4). Each member of a group is charged their individual rate as shown above, up to a group total of $30 (maximum), and each receives a map. A group receives one epunch. Individuals or groups desiring to compete on a second course after completing their first can do so for a reduced fee of $2/map subject to approval at the event by the Event Director.

Important Notes
  • If you wish to become a QOC member you should join online in advance via this webpage (which also explains the member benefits). Membership is completely optional.
  • Most of our events use an 'epunch' timing chip for electronic timing. Individuals or groups without their own epunch will be loaned one for that event. Loaned epunches that are lost incur a $40 replacement fee. Epunches (also known as SI-cards or finger sticks) can be purchased from online vendors as described here.
  • Former QOC members who have let their membership lapse pay non-member fees.
  • Compasses are available at no charge, but if lost incur a $15 replacement fee.
  • Please provide collateral (such as car keys) when borrowing a compass or epunch.
  • Beginners are encouraged to watch relevant videos such as this one created by QOC's instructional guru David Onkst.
