Camp WilsonPre-registration is required for this event, opening Monday, November 18 at 6pm and closing Saturday November 23 at 12 noon.
There will be no day-of registration.

Quantico Orienteering Club is pleased to return to Pohick Bay: Camp Wilson in suburban Virginia. Full course stats and course setter comments are now posted below.

Some courses will entail a road crossing from PBRP across Gunston Road and onto a section of Meadowood Special Recreation Management Area (SRMA). For an overview of the areas being used for this event, see this map.

The entrance to Camp Wilson is SEPARATE AND DISTINCT from the park main entrance that many of you are used to using (see photo). It is located just before the Gunston Fire Station. It's easy to miss, so slow down after you pass the entrance to the Pohick Golf Course and be on the look-out for the event signs.

The main parking area/parade field at Camp Wilson should be able to fit most participant's cars in parking slots. But we will still have overflow parking in the camping areas off the access road as needed. Buses will park in the far rear of the Camp Wilson area next to the disused Scout Hall.

No parking is permitted along the sides of the Camp Wilson entrance road, except in designated slots, in order to avoid any impediment to emergency-vehicle access. As you enter Camp Wilson, look for a parking volunteer in a reflective vest who will direct you to the appropriate parking areas and spaces.

Check-in will be in the vicinity of the Camp Wilson wash house (closed for the season) which is easily visible adjacent to the main parking area/parade ground.

Volunteer: Sign up for a volunteer slot via this form, or email the Event Director directly for other options.

Orders Open for QOC Jerseys: Come check out the custom QOC jerseys and confirm your preferred size and style! We'll have them on display at this event from ~10:30am - 12pm. Orders must be placed before Monday Dec. 9; details are here. Custom QOC Jerseys

Post-event Social: After your course, grab a bite to eat at the Casa Tequila Bar and Grill, located four miles north of Pohick.

Important notes:
For the courses crossing Gunston Road, there will be controls on both sides of the designated crossing point (see course notes). This point, just adjacent to the Camp Wilson entrance and clearly marked on the pavement, is the only permissible crossing point to and from Meadowood. The visibility from the crossing point in both directions along Gunston Road is excellent, but the speed limit is 50 MPH and cars often exceed that speed, so make sure to stop and observe carefully before crossing. A road guard, wearing a reflective vest, will be in place at the Gunston Road crossing point to watch for approaching vehicles and warn them, as necessary, that there is foot traffic at the crossing point.

Do not cross any part of the Pohick Bay Golf Course, which is located north of Camp Wilson.

You may encounter horses and riders on Meadowood East, which is a local center of equestrian activity and features trails specially designed to withstand the effects of horse traffic. When moving near a horse and rider, please slow down until you pass them and yield the right of way, if you encounter one while running on a trail.

Free Beginner Instruction will be offered, but please reach out to the Event Director if you have a group, so we can plan accordingly. Also, make sure to check out our Your First Event and For Beginners webpages. Beginners are also encouraged to watch relevant videos such as this one created by QOC's instructional guru David Onkst. If they don’t answer any remaining questions you have, just use our Contact Form and ask.

Check in will open about 9:45am and courses will open at 10:00am. Everyone must be out of the woods and back at the registration/finish area by 3:00pm when we will begin picking up the controls. Allow yourself time to get back to the registration area and download regardless of whether you have finished. We want to make sure of everyone’s safety and status.

Youth & Group Leaders: If you are leading a youth group or large group, please visit our For Group Leaders webpage. Even though you will be pre-registering online, please contact the Event Director to let them know your plans and numbers.

Course Map Scales: White 1:5000; Yellow, Orange & Brown 1:7500; Green, Red & Blue 1:10000.

For various reasons we don't have an event at Pohick Camp Wilson / Meadowood every year - but right now & this time of year, this terrain is some of our best! Easily as great as the best parts of Fountainhead or Prince William and better than other parts. The woods are beautifully clear and wide open in most of the park. The courses are extremely runnable / easy moving. The map is very high quality and current. NOTE: Two maps have been combined into one for our event. The Meadowood map (across the road, where Advanced and Orange courses will Start) is also very well mapped but not as fully field checked as the Pohick side. Also, there are almost no form-lines on the Meadowood side. The terrain is completely readable from the contours and form lines that are on the map...but the Pohick side will look much steeper unless you realize there are form lines between almost every 5m contour on that side of the road.

Courses are not "steep" overall, there are many legs of very little climb or downhill, but a few legs will climb quite a bit and some route decisions will be impacted by fairly steep terrain. Orange and Advanced courses start on the Meadowood side and come back across the road to the Pohick side to finish. The single, mandatory crossing point has a control on each side of the road that you must punch. Your time crossing the road between these controls will not count as part of your course. This makes these courses large butterfly loops...make sure you do the loop(s) in the right direction. Pay attention to control order and control codes #s. On the Pohick side there are more controls on different features and in closer proximity. Check your control codes.

Courses are designed to be fun, fast, and navigationally challenging vs 'hard'. If you have successfully navigated to the feature, control descriptions should be completely sufficient to reach the flag & control.

Prominent Features as Control Locations:
The 'X' control location on the Meadowood side are large concrete pipes, and on the Camp Wilson side is a camp charcoal grill.
White/Yellow/Orange:
Most trails are fully covered in leaves, but have lots of tree blazes that make it fairly easy to follow the trail if you're paying attention and keeping map contact. White and Yellow are true White & Yellow designs but this park allows for longer, more controls, and more variety and detail than many of our venues can provide for White and Yellow especially. Hopefully these are even more fun and challenging White & Yellow courses than we're often able to have.
Yellow Course: After control #7 there are streamers to connect you to the next handrail (the passing trail about 15m away.)
Orange/Brown/Green/Red/Blue:
The vegetation is well mapped; light green will typically not slow you down very much, and often has full-speed micro-routes; any un-mapped or under-mapped vegetation is likely very new and small and easy to bounce around or even sometimes through. Erosion gullies are respectable, and should be considered in your navigation choices. There are areas of the park that are very ridge/valley and other areas that are fairly complex / "Middle"-esq terrain.

Group Entries

Participants are welcome to orienteer together as a group (up to the maximum for that event; usually 4). Each member of a group is charged their individual rate as shown above, up to a group total of $30 (maximum), and each receives a map. A group receives one epunch. Individuals or groups desiring to compete on a second course after completing their first can do so for a reduced fee of $2/map subject to approval at the event by the Event Director.

Important Notes
  • If you wish to become a QOC member you should join online in advance via this webpage (which also explains the member benefits). Membership is completely optional.
  • Most of our events use an 'epunch' timing chip for electronic timing. Individuals or groups without their own epunch will be loaned one for that event. Loaned epunches that are lost incur a $40 replacement fee. Epunches (also known as SI-cards or finger sticks) can be purchased from online vendors as described here.
  • Former QOC members who have let their membership lapse pay non-member fees.
  • Compasses are available at no charge, but if lost incur a $15 replacement fee.
  • Please provide collateral (such as car keys) when borrowing a compass or epunch.
  • Beginners are encouraged to watch relevant videos such as this one created by QOC's instructional guru David Onkst.
