On Sunday, January 7th we held a first QOC’s event of 2024 at Fountainhead Regional Park – the eastern section of the park this time. The day before was very rainy, but we got very lucky with a cold, but nearly sunny day and we welcomed around 200 runners on 7 courses designed by Francis Hogle and his course setting students. What a nice day for orienteering!
A big thank you goes to all course setters! This job requires many hours designing all courses; going to the park over several days; spending a day or two hanging controls days before; and then arriving early on the day of the race to make sure all is well for the race. It’s a lot of hard work!
Many thanks to all volunteers who made this event a success! – to John Organek with the setup, to Dasa Merkova helping with the setup and beginners’ instructions; to Harry Jones, Susan Shoemaker, Hugo Estrada and his son at the check-in and map distribution; to John Cummings and Matt Knight helping with beginners’ instructions. To John Baker, Scott Sharp, Matt Knight, Kim Jepsen, Paul Hession, Michal Jarnik and Justin Brown who went back out in the woods to pick up the controls. An extra thank you goes to Charles Carrick for overall support and for taking care of all the details needed for this event to happen. And the final thank you goes to Amy Louden and Valerie Meyer for their tireless dedication and expertise in printing maps and running the e-punch system the entire day!
