May 14
Sunday

MTBO CANCELLATION: The odds are now deemed quite high that the trails will be too wet to responsibly ride on this Sunday. As a result, the MTBO portion of this event is cancelled. The foot/classic orienteering will take place.

Welcome back to Rosaryville State Park in Prince George’s County, the site of the 2015 Mid-Atlantic Championships! We have a full set of 7 courses from beginner to long advanced. as well as 3 mountain bike orienteering (MTBO) course options.

Rosaryville is relatively flat, but there are areas of good contour detail. It has a wide variety of vegetation, from large open fields to impenetrable forest. There is an elaborate trail network, and the park is widely known as a trail biking destination.

The courses for runners (and walkers) run the usual gamut from White (beginner) to Blue (long advanced). The climb is not significant. The forest mapped as white is open and runnable in many places. The mapped rootstocks have decayed, and some of them are completely invisible now. Those that remain are often dwarfed by new-fallen trees that are not mapped. Rootstocks are not used as control locations on these courses.

On Foot: Registration is from 10:30 to 1:15, and you must be off the course by 3:00 p.m. Please check in with the finish crew even if you did not complete your course. White, Yellow, Orange, and Brown courses will be printed at 1:7500. Green, Red, and Blue will be at 1:10000. Newcomers are welcome, and beginner instruction will be available at all times. An introduction to the course colors and difficulties can be found on our home page, and our volunteers can help you select an appropriate course if you are unsure.

Important Notes
  • At the event, we can only accept payment in cash or check; online, you may use a credit card or PayPal account.
  • If you have access to a smartphone, you may become a member at the event by joining online via this webpage (which also explains the member benefits). Membership is completely optional. If you wish to join or renew, we strongly recommend joining (or renewing) online before the event rather than at it to save time and because it's easier.
  • Most of our events use an 'epunch' timing chip for electronic timing. Individuals or groups without their own epunch pay a higher entry fee (see above), which includes the loan of an epunch for that event. Loaned epunches that are lost incur a $40 replacement fee. Epunches (also known as SI-cards or finger sticks) are usually available for sale at each event as described here.
  • Former QOC members who have let their membership lapse pay non-member fees.
  • Compasses are available at no charge, but if lost incur a $15 replacement fee.
  • Please provide collateral (driver's license or car keys) when borrowing a compass or epunch.
  • For additional safety, whistles are available for sale at $1/each.
  • Free beginner instruction is always available - just ask at the registration table.
