We had a superb day of orienteering at Wheaton Park, Maryland. Although it was cold all week and it snowed in the morning, the day developed into a sunny beautiful day with no wind, clear skies, albeit wet and mushy ground from the melting snow. Several people volunteered their time to help throughout the day. We had multiple groups of beginners and even a few American Sign Language (ASL) beginners. The beginner instructors, Cecelia and John Landers, Nadim Ahmad, Mihai Sirbu, Dasa Merkova, Patti Mace (ASL instructor), and Jan Merka were kept very busy and at one point, we had 5 beginner instruction groups going at the same time. We had a total of 195 starts and everyone came back by 3pm. Mihai Sirbu, who designed the courses and set out controls, and Tom Nolan, were able to work around construction and the resultant very muddy ground at the park at the last minute. Shirley Tan and Mary Snieckus helped with setup, arranged the registration tables, made coffee, set out food, and boiled multiple pots of water for the hot chocolate and tea. Amy Louden handled the e-punch and start/finish tasks and was assisted by Shirley Tan and Mary Snieckus. Thank you to the entire Lyness/Rigdon Family came out in full force and helped the entire day: Eric, Cambria, Indy Lyness and Joan Rigdon. Dasa Merkova, Erin Brandt, Iva Zicha, Ryan Stasiowski, and the Lyness/Rigdon family ran registration. Shirley Tan, Mary Snieckus, Amy Louden, Dasa Merkova, and many others helped clean out the room and put away tables and chairs. Many thanks to Mark Mace, Nadim Ahmad, Tom Nolan, Ann and Kim Jepsen, Mike Stasiowski for picking up our controls and to Amy Louden and Patti Mace for sorting controls and to Gary Smith and John Baker for staying back and moving boxes out. Several QOC members repaired to a local “Hong Kong” style restaurant, Full Key, and enjoyed a nice Chinese dinner after the meet. In all, a very happy ending to a satisfying day for all. A big Thank You to all who supported and helped in this event. Everything went so smoothly and we could not have done this without all quiet efforts of our great volunteers today.
