It was a great turnout for the QOC meet at Patapsco Valley State Park’s Avalon area this past Sunday. The weather was not quite as nice as predicted but was fine for orienteering, with mostly overcast skies and temperatures in the mid 40s. The storm front that was to bring Maryland six inches of snow and very low temperatures the next day held off just long enough for us to finish the meet at 3PM, when a cold rain started to fall.
Thank you to the course setters Ryan and Mike Stasiowski for designing a challenging array of courses in this hilly park. The 15.6 kilometer/820 meter climb Ultra Long course was added to the slate of events for this meet with 26 starters and proved to be Ultra Challenging.
Thank you to all the volunteers who made this meet run smoothly. Without them these meets would not happen. Arriving early to set-up were Elliott Hamilton, Kim Jepsen and Mike Berry. Helping with registration were Luisa Bishop, Dianne Baker and John Landers. Andrew Bishop and Iva Zicha handed out maps and David Levine provided beginner instruction. Amy Louden and her crew of Shirley Tan, Mary Snieckus, Eva Matveeva and probably others I don’t even know about handled the ePunch station. Braving the cold rain that hit at exactly 3PM to retrieve controls from a very large and steep area were John Baker, Mike Berry, Eric Menendez, Eva Matveeva, Tom Wells, Mihai Sirbu and Charles Carrick. The course setter Mike Stasiowski also ventured out to pick-up controls.
