Rockwood

On Saturday, 24 September, a Learn-O was conducted at Rockwood Park just south of Richmond, Virginia under cloudy skies with temps in the 70s. 10 people came in spite of the rain that was predicted for the day but while it rained just before the class, it then cleared up and held of raining again until the class ended. The new orienteers learned about map features, the 5 basic skills, staying on the map, and how to use a compass with the features to navigate. Short videos and exercises were used to reinforce the techniques. Then the newbies went out on a short, 5 point course to practice. After lunch and some additional tips and practice, they went out on a 4 km 18 point course that included control points of varying difficulty, from beginner level up to one intermediate level control. The group then reconvened for a course review. We hope to see attendees put what they learned into practice at future orienteering events in both Central Virginia and elsewhere. The results:
