Bushwhacker Adventure Running Race

In addition to the QOC event at Lake Accotink, there was other navigational action going on in QOC-land last Sunday in the form of EX2's Bushwhacker Adventure Running Race, a nominally 10 mile trail race from Hemlock Overlook Regional Park to Fountainhead Regional Park with the twist that runners were allowed to take off-trail shortcuts navigating by map and compass. QOC was well represented by overall winner, Jon Torrance, third female overall, Peggy Dickison, and a sweep of the first four positions in the Male 45-49 category by David Onkst, Andy Britton, Nadim Ahmed and Jon Pifer.

Lake Accotink Results and Route Gadget Posted

Results and Route Gadget (where you can draw your route or view those of others) are now posted for the Lake Accotink event. Thanks so much to Sidney Sachs and the rest of the volunteer crew for putting on such a fine meet. Here is a direct link to the results.

National Orienteering Day is this Sunday!

Learn to navigate through Springfield's Lake Accotink Park using a map and compass to find the checkpoints we've placed on trails. This is an easy sport to learn, a great team building activity, and ideal for families who enjoy the outdoors.

You don't need to sign up in advance; just show up between 12pm and 2pm this Sunday, September 19, 2010 and a club member will help you get started with a bit of newcomer instruction, and then you can start your hike or run. A variety of courses from beginner through to seasoned adventure racer complexity will be available. Come by yourself or bring your friends and family. Any way you try it, you'll find "O" is the way to go.

Most orienteering events have a small fee to offset the permit costs and map production - and you are really going to like our detailed maps! Otherwise, just wear a smile, the clothes you would for a hike or run in a local park and bring a compass. If you don't have a compass we have plenty you can borrow.

At this years National Orienteering Day event QOC will be passing out a complimentary copy of Orienteering North America magazine (while supplies last), and you will have a chance to take home randomly awarded door prizes from Orienteering USA sponsors.
