Registration is now closed.
UPDATE: Due to the recent heavy rains and damp conditions, the Intro-to-O courses will take place on the CCBC campus. In place of muddy trails and slippery stream crossings, the white and yellow courses will be umbrella friendly and there will be even more controls to enjoy finding!
Quantico Orienteering Club (QOC) invites you to join us Sunday Sept. 29 at CCBC Catonsville. This is a combined Sprint on the CCBC campus for our regular attendees and a free Intro to Orienteering session for first-timers in the Patapsco Valley State Park adjacent to campus.
Intro to O: Those new to Orienteering are invited to join us to experience this fun, family-friendly sport. Small groups will meet with our instructors to learn the basics of Orienteering and take you on a small demo course. After your instruction you will set out on one of our beginner courses. For more information about the free Intro to Orienteering event, click here [2].
The White and Yellow courses are for beginners. They follow linear features such as roads, trails, edges of fields, or streams. Checkpoints for the White course will be set on the linear feature. The longer Yellow course checkpoints will be placed on or a short distance from linear features. Going off trail is allowed on both courses, but Yellow courses are set to encourage it.
Sprint-O-Palooza: Choose between the classic White and Yellow courses in Patapsco Valley State Park or join our Sprint-O-Palooza event and run Sprint courses on the CCBC campus. Sprints are designed for fast running and decision making in an urban setting (but you're welcome to go at your own pace). Course designer Alex Azarov has generously designed a full slate of sprint courses. Orange through Blue signups will each be provided with two unique sprint courses. The times from both Sprint courses (A and B) will be combined for your final time. Orienteers are encouraged to rest in between so they can sprint both. Note: due to the urban nature of the sprint courses, metal spikes are prohibited at this event.
Check-in for all courses and Intro to O will be in the field adjacent to CCBC parking lot 6, and will open at 9:45am. Courses will open at 10:00. Everyone must be out of the woods and back to the registration/finish area by 3:00pm. Please allow yourself time to return to the check-in area and download, regardless of whether you have finished, so we know you have survived your adventure!
Note: While the Patapsco Valley State Park has a strict rain policy, this event will go on rain or shine! In the case of rain we will utilize alternative white and yellow courses set on the campus of CCBC (as noted above).
[3] Volunteer: Sign up for a volunteer slot via this form [3], or email the Event Director [4] directly for other options.
Youth & Group Leaders: If you are leading a youth or large group, please visit our For Group Leaders [5] page. Even though you will be pre-registering online, please contact the Event Director to let them know your plans and numbers.
ASL: ASL-led instruction will be available at the Intro to O event. Participants should check the ASL box when registering so we know you are coming.
Post-Event Social: After your course, join fellow orienteers at the State Fare [6] restaurant in Catonsville, located here [7] just 2 miles north of CCBC. Get 10% off your check with map as proof, courtesy of manager Kirby!
