April 8
Saturday

UMDRegistration for this *Saturday* event will open at 6pm on Monday April 3 and close at noon on Friday April 7. There will not be day-of registration.

This Saturday event will be on the beautiful campus of the University of Maryland. The SCORE-O course is designed by our Course Setter, Tom Nolan, with an updated map by Ted Good. Thanks to QOC members and professors at UMD, Rob Briber and Dan Lathrop, for arranging for this event, and many thanks to the University of Maryland Clark School of Engineering for allowing our access to the Kim Building and Plaza.

Please plan your Score-O run such that you finish by 3pm. The time limit for the course is 1.5 hours. For further details, please read course notes below.

Directions and Parking: Click here to view maps with entrances to UMD marked with blue dot, parking details, and meet registration location (Kim Building). There is a lot of fencing going up in regions around the Kim building for construction of a new building, though the Kim Plaza will remain accessible for the day for restroom access. Per the map, visitors may part at Xfinity Parking Lots XX1, RR2, 9b, 11b. Please do not park in the Smaller Lots (CC, T, DD, GG1, etc) unless you have valid faculty or staff permit. A large web-based interactive map of campus is here.

Restrooms for QOC use will be in the Kim Engineering Building or across the street from check in at the AV Williams Building.
Metal spikes are not allowed inside any UMD building or on the course.
Water fountains are inside the Kim Building. No water will be provided.

Score-O Orienteering Description: This College Park event will take place on the University of Maryland (UMD) campus, with an updated map by Ted Good. This event will use a Score-O format. There are 30 controls scattered around the campus, all marked on the map, but without the usual lines connecting the controls. Your goal is to visit as many of them as you can, in any order, within a predefined time limit. All have the same point value, one point for each control. Most are located next to buildings, but are generally not obvious on the approach. A few are placed in wooded areas of various sizes. School is in session. Even though this is a Saturday event, you may encounter people on electric scooters, bikes, and skateboards on the paths. They are quiet and fast. Please be vigilant! The course will also cross roads that carry automobile traffic. There are lots of crosswalks; use them if you can. The map is very detailed, and is printed at a scale of 1:4000 on 2-sided 11x17 paper. The start and finish appear on both sides of the map. A few buildings, such as parking structures, have multiple floors, but all the controls on this course are at ground level. There are several areas with construction and fences that are too new to have made it onto the map. Do not try to go through these areas. You'll just have to go around them. The controls are well away from any construction. You may start at any time during your preregistered time slot. The time limit for the course is 1.5 hours (i.e. 90 minutes). You will lose one point for every minute exceeding that time. Bring a watch or phone to keep track of your time.

Check-in is at the Kim Engineering Building Plaza, an open area on the West side of Paint Branch Drive. From the Beltway: Travel to exit 25 and get on Rt 1 heading south. Then travel about 2 miles south on Rt 1 and turn right on Campus Drive (entering the University of Maryland).

From Baltimore: Take I-95 S, and at the Capital Beltway (I-495) take the exit for Rt 1 south (to College Park). Travel about 2 miles south on Rt 1 and turn right on Campus Drive (entering the University of Maryland).

From Washington DC downtown: Take Rt 1 (Baltimore Avenue) north to College Park. Turn left on Campus Drive in College Park city.

Important Notes
  • If you wish to become a QOC member you should join online in advance via this webpage (which also explains the member benefits). Membership is completely optional.
  • Most of our events use an 'epunch' timing chip for electronic timing. Individuals or groups without their own epunch will be loaned one for that event. Loaned epunches that are lost incur a $40 replacement fee. Epunches (also known as SI-cards or finger sticks) can be purchased from online vendors as described here.
  • Former QOC members who have let their membership lapse pay non-member fees.
  • Compasses are available at no charge, but if lost incur a $15 replacement fee.
  • Please provide collateral (such as car keys) when borrowing a compass or epunch.
  • In addition to free on-site beginner instruction if needed, beginners are encouraged to watch relevant videos such as this one created by QOC's instructional guru David Onkst
