Fountainhead

Those of you who know Fountainhead know that some of the best orienteering is fairly far north of the area where we usually assemble - and for this *Saturday* event, to access it we'll be using the Bull Run Marina at the north end of Fountainhead.

Reminder - Parking is across from the Bull Run Marina. Runners on Orange through Blue courses will take a shuttle to the Start. Please allow enough time to register, and get a shuttle to the Start before 1:30 PM.

A full set of courses is planned, and event timing is standard: register between 10:45am - 1:15pm, start anytime between 11am - 1:30pm, and be out of the woods by 3:00pm. Full course details and course setter comments are posted below.

The Start/Finish area is at the west end of the Parking area for the Bull Run Marina. Yates Ford Road next to the parking area is very busy, and its entrance/exit is in a long, blind curve. Oncoming traffic is likely to be going very fast. Be extra careful when you leave the parking lot.
As said at another place there are no restrooms on site. But there will be several portable toilets from Don's John. Just in case, we have additional TP and Hand Cleaner.
Sorry, no playground, just some huge Mulch heaps for the residents of Fairfax County.
If you have extra time after the competition, walk (no car access) across Yates Ford Road to the Marina area. It is a place to put-in boats, if you have a season pass.
Newcomers are always welcome, and beginner instruction will be available at all times. An introduction to the course colors and difficulties can be found on our home page, and our volunteers can help you select an appropriate course if you are unsure.
Dogs on leash are welcome.

From the Fairfax County Parkway, take Burke Lake Rd (Rt 645) west for 4.3 miles. Turn left on Maple Branch Rd, and go 0.8 miles then turn left onto VA 612/643. In 0.6 miles go slightly right to stay on VA 612. In less than 1 mile and before either the marina or the bridge over the Occoquan, turn left into the parking area on the south side of Old Yates Ford Rd.

Course NotesClassic

There is much up and down on ALL courses, more - if you are not following the "best" route. For the Brown and Orange courses, the climb is especially in the beginning and at the end. Also, expect 2/3 of the courses to be very steep. There will be two maps, the Connector map and the main Fountainhead (Far West) map. The Connector map has very limited field checking. It covers a very narrow area between the Occoquan Reservoir and private land. However, the Orange and up courses, will have both maps. They will have to turn over their map as indicated, to complete the course.
Please respect the private land and avoid entering the red striped "out of bounds" areas as marked on the maps. Some of the public trails cross private land, so most courses will be somewhat on private land.

Please show up before 1 pm (or earlier, if you can), in order to make sure to finish before 3pm, when we start the control pick up.
Make sure you drink plenty of water before, and after your course, especially during sunny and/or humid weather. Water is also available on the courses, but as always, please don't drink directly from the jugs. The cups are small but refill as many times as you like. Yes, there are Ticks and Poison Ivy, not too bad yet, but afterwards check yourself for ticks anyway.

The beginner courses (White and Yellow) won't use the shuttle, as their Start is on the parking lot.
The intermediate and the advanced courses (Orange through Blue), will use a shuttle to a remote Start on a map with an exchange to a different map. The Good News is that you don't have to walk. The Bad News is that there are no facilities at the remote start and no clothing return. In addition, should you need to abort your course you have only two options: 1) follow the Bull Run Trail ( blue blazes) many miles to the finish or 2) the less desirable option from a safety standpoint, return to the start and wait for the control pickup crew to find you.

Safety Bearing: Most ridges have rides or trails. Otherwise, generally North to the Blue Blaze Trail then North to the parking area. I advise against trying to follow the water line north to Yates Ford Rd only because of the steepness.

Terrain & Map: Fountainhead has some of the most open leaf-on forest in the area. The difference between rootstocks and dot knolls is subtle. In general, rootstocks are over 1.5 meters. Dot knolls may be very low ( .3m) and have more dirt. The slow-going but visible areas (vertical green stripe symbol) are used in patches throughout the map. In the 3 years since the map was remade, some of the vegetation has changed to be more open woods. With the opening of the Bull Run Trail to Mountain bikers, some trails have become more pronounced. Indistinct trails and rides are subtle. The control bags and E-punch may be slightly removed from the feature since I had to look for something to hang them on. Water level on the map should have water or be at least be muddy. Advanced courses have the option of using a bridge.

Important Notes
  • At the event, we can only accept payment in cash or check; online, you may use a credit card or PayPal account.
  • If you have access to a smartphone, you may become a member at the event by joining online via this webpage (which also explains the member benefits). Membership is completely optional. If you wish to join or renew, we strongly recommend joining (or renewing) online before the event rather than at it to save time and because it's easier.
  • Most of our events use an 'epunch' timing chip for electronic timing. Individuals or groups without their own epunch pay a higher entry fee (see above), which includes the loan of an epunch for that event. Loaned epunches that are lost incur a $40 replacement fee. Epunches (also known as SI-cards or finger sticks) are usually available for sale at each event as described here.
  • Former QOC members who have let their membership lapse pay non-member fees.
  • Compasses are available at no charge, but if lost incur a $15 replacement fee.
  • Please provide collateral (driver's license or car keys) when borrowing a compass or epunch.
  • For additional safety, whistles are available for sale at $1/each.
  • Free beginner instruction is always available - just ask at the registration table.
