March 11
Saturday

Night Orienteering Night-O returns to Prince William Forest Park Happyland (Camp 5) on Saturday evening, March 11. Come orienteer in the dark - it's fun, it's instructive, and we've got a warm lodge with a fireplace and convivial folks to hang out with after your run. This event occurs in the middle of the training weekend, but is a separate event, so training weekend attendees are welcome to participate, but will be required to pay the individual meet fees.

This Night-O event does not require pre-registration, so just come to the event and register any time between 6:30pm - 7:30pm. Start your course any time between 7:00 - 8:30pm, and be absolutely sure to be back before 10pm. Course details for the 4 courses (1 beginner, 1 intermediate, 2 advanced - short and long) are now posted below.

Driving directions are also posted below. We have not finalized the parking arrangements for the Night-O participants yet, but we will post the details as soon as they are available. Be prepared to walk up to 800 meters in the dark to the registration area, so have your headlamp or flashlight ready to go. We will try to get closer-in parking, but parking is tight in that area.

If you are not participating in the training weekend, cabin accommodations unfortunately will not be available. If you don’t want to drive home after the meet there are several hotels/motels in the immediate area. Just search for lodging in Dumfries.

Any youth or large groups attending, please contact the Event Director so that we can coordinate pre-registration for your group; the group registration and waiver form is part of the information on our Group Leaders page.

Any questions? Feel free to use our Contact Us form or email an event volunteer directly via the linked names below.

Course NotesNight-O

Intermediate and Advanced courses will cross the South Fork of Quantico Creek between the start/finish and the rest of the course. It is highly recommended to use the bridge just downstream from the dam. Please watch out for other runners on the bridge and on the narrow trails nearby.

Intermediate course participants: especially in the dark as you start your course, it may be easy to mistake the last control (# 11) for the first (# 1) when you look at your map, especially since they are not that far from each other. Watch out for this and make sure you start off going to #1 and not #11.

The map scale for the Beginner course is 1:5000. All other courses use 1:10000. Contour interval is 5m.

Important Notes
  • At the event, we can only accept payment in cash or check; online, you may use a credit card or PayPal account.
  • If you have access to a smartphone, you may become a member at the event by joining online via this webpage (which also explains the member benefits). Membership is completely optional. If you wish to join or renew, we strongly recommend joining (or renewing) online before the event rather than at it to save time and because it's easier.
  • Most of our events use an 'epunch' timing chip for electronic timing. Individuals or groups without their own epunch pay a higher entry fee (see above), which includes the loan of an epunch for that event. Loaned epunches that are lost incur a $40 replacement fee. Epunches (also known as SI-cards or finger sticks) are usually available for sale at each event as described here.
  • Former QOC members who have let their membership lapse pay non-member fees.
  • Compasses are available at no charge, but if lost incur a $15 replacement fee.
  • Please provide collateral (driver's license or car keys) when borrowing a compass or epunch.
  • For additional safety, whistles are available for sale at $1/each.
  • Free beginner instruction is always available - just ask at the registration table.
