Patapsco Glen Artney

What a spectacular day! Course results can be seen below as well as on Attackpoint. Don't forget to enter your course into RouteGadget as well.

Next event: Wheaton Regional Park, *Saturday*, March 14.

Finally! The weather decided to cooperate and allowed the Glen Artney / Hilton meet to go ahead. The first controls were set mid-February; however, the event was cancelled twice (and the Greenbelt event in turn postponed because of concerns for impact to the terrain there) before this event could be held on March 8. We were concerned about the condition of the terrain with melting snow, slush and potentially swelling streams. Fortunately, this did not deter too many orienteers - there were 115 starts, including 18 runners on the UltraLong course where the slush surely added another 5 km of extra exertion for completing the course. It is fair to say that all runners were extra challenged, but we hope everybody had a good time and enjoyed the good weather.

Volunteers: Thank you all! Esben and Rikke Jepsen for help with setup in the morning; Valerie Meyer and Amy Louden, our reliable team of e-punch gurus, who were aided by Mary Snieckus and Tori Campbell; Diana Todd for handling beginner’s instruction and Dan Tam Do, John Landers and Helena Mora-Jensen for staffing the registration table. Finally, thanks to the control pick-up crew: Tom Nolan, Jody Landers, Kathleen Lennon, Greg Lennon, Don Fish, John Baker and Jack Logansmith who had his debut with this task and was thanked by loading him up with 9 controls.

The repeated delays meant that Mike Newman and MD VP Tom Nolan had to work double time to secure, re-secure and cancel permits from the park and the community college, and Greg Lennon almost had to update the website and UL registration on a daily basis as new storm fronts rolled in. This work is often invisible to the rest of us, but here it is: thanks!

Honorable mention goes to Steve Camp and Bill Grubb who volunteered (had it been necessary) to pick up controls after one of the cancellations.

Three new members joined QOC at the meet - welcome to Gregory Shuk, Jack Anderson and Peter Knapp. We look forward to seeing you at future meets.

Finally, on behalf of QOC, we would like to thank Kathryn Arnold, Event Scheduler for CCBC and Joe Vogelpohl, Park Assistant Manager for Patapsco Valley State Park for their help in making this event possible.

See you out there!
