Night Orienteering Night orienteering returns - join us for our annual romp in the dark! For those who need some light, start at 7pm; for those who want the real Night-O experience, start after 7:45pm (up until 8:45pm), but no matter when you start, make sure to be back by 10pm. Time to go bump in the night!

Course stats for the four courses (beginner, intermediate and short and long advanced courses) are now posted below. While controls may be shared between night and day courses, the courses themselves are different.
Update: Course setter comments relevant to both night and day courses are now posted below. Map scales: 1:5000 for beginner, 1:7500 for intermediate, 1:10000 for both advanced. Map sizes: letter for beg/int/short advanced, legal for long advanced.

Registration, start and finish will be in the Nature Center; park near it or beyond it as directed.

Any youth or large groups attending, please contact the Meet Director so that we can coordinate pre-registration for your group; the group registration and waiver form is part of the information on our Group Leaders page.

Additional notes:

  • For this night event, please do not take dogs with you while you are out on your course.
  • The Golf and Clarksburg Road are both OUT OF BOUNDS.
  • Want to learn more about headlamps? Check out this thread on AP, or ask QOC members Ted Good or Greg Lennon, who have the Petzl Tikka RXP (available at REI and elsewhere) and Cree 1800lm (eBay!) headlamps, respectively. Although not orienteering specific, general reviews sites include this one and this one.

Training Time! The 2014 US Night Orienteering Championships are likely to be right here in our area this Fall, so why not test out your skills and equipment here at Little Bennett?

Course NotesNight Orienteering

The woods are a winter wonderland, with 1-2 inches of snow throughout. Let's hope it does not turn into a mud bath due to the higher temperatures of the weekend.

The terrain is open with excellent running. Still, the snow cover will hide underfoot hazards and steep slopes can be quite slippery. Occasional thorn clusters and brambles are sharp so pay attention.

Please be mindful of your fellow runners when driving in and out of the park. Beginner courses share the access road and the parking loop, and advanced courses will cross the road at least once.

Controls are scrambled between the night and day courses. Shared controls have different approach vectors to avoid a strong "deja vu" syndrome.

The "special element" symbol, represented by a circle in the control description is used for a low heap of marble-like rocks. These controls are found on advanced courses.

Blue and night advanced long runners will get their feet wet while crossing the creek.

For beginners, watch for painted markers (placed by park staff) on trees by the trails since they can help you find your way when the trails are not clearly visible due to snow.

Important Notes
  • At the event, we can only accept payment in cash or check; online, you may use a credit card or PayPal account.
  • You may become a member at the event or by joining online via this webpage (which also explains the member benefits). Membership is completely optional.
  • Most of our events use an 'epunch' timing chip for electronic timing. Individuals or groups without their own epunch pay a higher entry fee (see above), which includes the loan of an epunch for that event. Loaned epunches that are lost incur a $40 replacement fee. Epunches (also known as SI-cards or finger sticks) are usually available for sale at each event as described here.
  • Compasses are available at no charge, but if lost incur a $15 replacement fee.
  • Please provide collateral (driver's license or car keys) when borrowing a compass or epunch.
  • For additional safety, whistles are available for sale at $1/each.
  • Free beginner instruction is always available - just ask at the registration table.
