October 27
Sunday

PWF BridgeWelcome to QOC's classic orienteering event at picturesque Prince William Forest Park near Quantico, VA. This event will have a full set of seven courses (white through blue), taking place in some of the nicest terrain this large park has to offer.

This event will be preceded on Saturday, October 26, by a training day at Camp 3 (Orenda) in the Park. Overnight cabin camping is available for those who want to stay for the classic orienteering event on Sunday. We hope to share details about this once the park has reopened. Note: The Winter Meeting and Potluck Party will NOT be held at this event, as it has been in the past.

Orienteering Details: Course details for the Sunday orienteering event are now posted below; while the beginner start location is right near registration, the start location for intermediate and advanced orienteers is "a pleasant 1 mile walk" away. Make sure you leave time to reach the start and finish your course before the courses close at 3:00pm. Course lengths are now posted below. Note that several courses are fairly steep, and that white and yellow courses have a streamered leg (where participants should follow the streamers through the woods to their next control). Also, the orange course has several quite advanced legs; it is not a good choice for those who are moving up from yellow for the first time.

New to orienteering? We will hold beginner clinics continuously during the event; just tell the friendly folks at registration if you'd like to be in one and they'll take care of you. Also, make sure to check out our Your First Event and For Beginners webpages, and if they don't answer any question you have, just use our Contact Us form and ask away!

Group Leaders: please see our For Group Leaders webpage and then contact the Event Director so your group can get pre-registered in advance.

Additional Information:

  • There will be a $5/car entrance fee; please have exact change ready to make your entry quicker. As Prince William Forest Park is very popular in the Fall, parking is always an issue. We chose to locate the registration area at the Telegraph Road Pavilion with 70+ parking spots for our exclusive use. However, since there is no other close parking, carpooling is strongly recommended. Those staying overnight at Camp 3 should carpool from there if possible.
  • If you do not have a National Park or Prince William Forest Park annual pass, the park entry fee is $5 per vehicle (another good reason to carpool!). If the gatehouse is not manned, you must pay the fee at the Visitor Center that you will pass on your way to the parking area.
  • Club members who have not signed the (new) liability waivers must do so at their first event of our Sept. - June season.
  • Map scale: 1:7500 for white & yellow, 1:10000 for orange, brown, green and red, and 1:15000 for blue. Red and blue maps are printed on 11x17 inch paper.
  • Contour interval for all maps is 5m.
  • Reminder: our entry fees have changed (see below). Cash or check is still the accepted way to pay.
  • Epunching will be in use for this event, and since all courses have 20 controls or less, pCards as well as all SI-cards may be used on all courses.
  • We will have both SI-8 epunch dibbers and pCards on hand to sell at this event (described here). Costs are discounted $5 through Dec. 31, meaning you can buy an SI-8 dibber for $35 or a pCard for $15 (cash or check).
  • Dogs are welcome in this park but must be kept on leash at all times.

Nearby Attraction: The National Museum of the Marine Corps is open from 9am - 5pm everyday, and admission is free to this impressive $60 million structure.

Wegmans Post-Race MeetUp Venue: The nearby Wegman's in Woodbridge welcomes all orienteers patronizing their Market Cafe Sunday afternoon after our event. Check out the reviews and especially the photos on Yelp to see just how popular (and large) this place is. Located (here) just two exits north on I-95 from our event, their Market Cafe upstairs offers an enormous selection of foods (plus free WiFi). It's a fine place to hang out and discuss your routes, so bring your map in with you!

Course NotesClassic Orienteering

The woods look great! The finish area for all courses is at the pavilion and close to the parking area. Please note that all courses cross roads with the park, so please be careful when crossing. Young children should be accompanied by an adult.

The beginner courses (white and yellow) start just behind the pavilion where registration takes place. Both white and yellow courses each have one streamered leg - make sure to follow the streamers between controls.

Note: the orange course has several advanced legs, and is not a good choice for runners moving up from yellow for the first time unless they are well prepared for off-trail navigation.

Intermediate and advanced courses (orange, brown, green, red, and blue) have a remote start, about a 1 mile pleasant walk from the main parking & registration area. Keep this in mind since the courses (still) close at 3pm, so allow enough time to get to this remote start and to be back by 3pm.

Important Notes
  • At the event, we can only accept payment in cash or check; online, you may use a credit card or PayPal account.
  • You may become a member at the event or by joining online via this webpage (which also explains the member benefits). Membership is completely optional.
  • Most of our events use an 'epunch' timing chip for electronic timing. Individuals or groups without their own epunch pay a higher entry fee (see above), which includes the loan of an epunch for that event. Loaned epunches that are lost incur a $40 replacement fee. Epunches (also known as SI-cards or finger sticks) are usually available for sale at each event as described here.
  • Compasses are available at no charge, but if lost incur a $15 replacement fee.
  • Please provide collateral (driver's license or car keys) when borrowing a compass or epunch.
  • For additional safety, whistles are available for sale at $1/each.
  • Free beginner instruction is always available - just ask at the registration table.
